The $80 Lesson in Love, Trust, and Fake Gold

When I was a teenager, I thought I was doing something slick.

I had a girlfriend, I had $80 in my pocket (which felt like a million at the time), and I had a cousin who told me he could get me a real gold necklace—for cheap. That should’ve been my first clue.

But I trusted him. And I really wanted to impress her.

So I bought the chain. Gave it to her with a grin like I’d just handed over a treasure chest. She was happy. I felt like a grown man. Life was good.

Until a couple days later, her neck started turning green.

Yeah… the chain was fake. Super fake.

Turns out my cousin either lied to me or got taken himself. Either way, I was out $80, looked like a fool, and learned three lessons real fast:

  • Don’t trust someone’s word just because they’re family.
  • Always check the quality of what you’re giving.
  • And when in doubt… stick with chocolate.

If I could go back, I’d do it differently.

For anyone else trying to give a gift that actually lasts, here are a couple of Amazon picks I wish I had access to back then:
